WITH THE GLOBAL NEW GENERATION Ghana

GHANA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

CIMG2597

The Global New Generation (GNG) Community Schools provide education for children in the highly deprived local communities surrounding them. The schools currently provide basic education for students from the nursery level through kindergarten to primary 6 and hope to expand to the Junior Secondary level in the forthcoming years.

Challenges

  • Weakened/dilapidated school structures
  • Poorly stocked library if available
  • Lack of a decent community computer resource/laboratory
  • Lack of funding to employ proper expertise among other things

HOW CAN VOLUNTEERS HELP?

GNG volunteers will work alongside experienced teaching professionals to help deliver lessons and mentor groups of students, helping to improve the education and support offered to children attending the schools. Volunteers can bring their own experience, skills and creativity to the after school clubs held at the school for all students. Cultural activities including drumming, singing, dancing, poetry and other artistic expressions are used to create awareness & social integration among children and the youth. Volunteers are also needed to work on crucial construction work of permanent brick classroom buildings to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the schools and other community resources.

MEDIC & HEALTH CARE INTERN PLACEMENT

Project Overview

Destination                  Ghana

Project Type               Health Care Placement

Duration                      2 – 28 weeks

Accommodation         GNG Volunteer House

Age                              18+

Volunteer with GNG and you will get to work with some of Africa’s friendliest people. Ghana has stunning beaches and scenery but it is the warmth of the people and their vibrant culture that will take your breath away. Our projects are all currently based in the Greater Accra Region

Medic volunteers contribute dependent upon their skill-set. Qualified professionals with the correct permits (to be obtained in advance) can practice their professions. Unqualified volunteers or those in medical training can assist local staff in their area of interest.  Please note that those with no medical training or knowledge can shadow staff and get involved with non invasive aspects of medical work and patient care.

The relatively few medical facilities in this region of Ghana cater for numerous out / in-patients every year. The hospitals carry out a range of procedures from diagnosis and treatment of everyday illnesses, to the care and respite of long-term HIV/AIDs sufferers. They run emergency departments, responding to local accidents and crises, as well as maternity wards and theatres offering basic surgeries. The hospitals serve the large population of the region, extending out further along the coast, where other medical facilities are sparse for some distance.

What is the need for this Internship?

The hospitals’ needs are two-fold; hands-on assistance from medical professionals and donor support towards improving services. The first of these can be provided in the form of volunteers including trained medical professionals being received to support the hospitals work and share skills with its local employees. The hospitals have been supporting volunteers who are training towards medical qualification, allowing them to work alongside local staff and learn from them.  Volunteers without relevant qualifications but with an interest in a medical field, or in training, have also been assisting local staff and learning from them in the hospitals.

About this role and benefits to the Intern

Medical volunteers will contribute dependent upon their skill-set, qualified professionals with the correct permits (to be obtained in advance) can practice their professions.  Unqualified volunteers or those in medical training can assist local staff in their area of interest.

Volunteers have the chance to experience a different medical setting to that they would typically find at home.  Trainee medical professionals will receive support from local staff in furthering their development towards qualification.

Based on the sandy beaches of Greater Accra, volunteers will be working and living on one of Africa’s most idyllic coastlines.

Living and flight costs must be covered by the Intern and each intern must fundraise a minimum amount for the GNG Foundation dependant on the duration of their placement. You can find out more by looking on our DATES & COSTS page
