What happens when 19 young people from Germany, France, and Tunisia come together for nine days in Berlin? They explore questions of power and perception, exchange perspectives across cultures, and turn their ideas into short films.
From September 8 to 16, 2026, the first encounter phase of CTRL + ALT + RE-POWER took place in Berlin.
Inspired by the familiar keyboard shortcut associated with restarting a computer, CTRL + ALT + RE-POWER invited participants to rethink everyday power dynamics, challenge assumptions and prejudices, and explore how digital media can shape the way stories are told.
The workshop connected directly to the wider theme of the exchange: if the way we frame a story can influence how others perceive it, then understanding power also means understanding who gets to tell a story, how it is told, and whose perspective is heard.
Across the nine days, participants explored questions of power and history through interactive activities, cultural exchange, creative work, and shared experiences.
Berlin Beyond the Surface:
We hiked up Teufelsberg to explore its history, surveillance, and street art.
We also visited the German Resistance Memorial Center, where personal stories sparked discussions on resistance, solidarity, and society today.
Stepping into Different Shoes:
Through the interactive “Island Experiment,” participants explored privilege, resources, and power, sparking conversations about fairness and diversity.
Community & Team Spirit:
From kayaking and cooking to halal marshmallows around the campfire, participants found plenty of ways to connect across cultures.
In the Power of Storytelling workshop, participants explored how camera angles, framing, editing, and other storytelling choices can influence how we interpret what we see. Working in international teams, participants took creative responsibility for developing, filming, and editing three short videos, which were premiered on the final evening.
“We Don’t Always See the Picture” – Prejudices & Perspectives
A story reminding us that before assuming someone is being rude or distant, there might be a simple explanation we can’t see (like wearing AirPods hidden under hair!).
“CTRL + ALT + RE-POWER” – Inspired by the Matilda Effect
A creative short about a man and a woman baking a cake together. When the cake is finished, the man receives the applause for an idea that was hers, illustrating how women’s contributions and achievements can be overlooked or attributed to others.
Youssef: Digital Isolation
A thought-provoking story about 22-year-old Youssef, whose constant focus on his phone causes him to miss opportunities for connection with family and friends. The film ends with a reminder to make space for the people and experiences around us.
Despite initial visa delays and busy school schedules, the first phase showed what can happen when young people from different backgrounds have the opportunity to learn, create, and spend time together.
The exchange continues in Djerba
Phase 1 in Berlin laid the foundation for the next stage of the project, which will take place in Djerba, Tunisia!
Are you a young person interested in international exchange, meeting peers from different backgrounds, and developing your own creative media project? Or are you a parent, educator, or youth worker interested in opportunities for young people?
Keep an eye on our homepage and social media channels for upcoming application details.
A huge thank you to all our partners and every participant who helped make this first phase possible!
